CIBIO – InBIO
A Master Fellowship (BI) (Reference ICETA 2016-55) in the R&D project PTDC/BIA-EVF/1624/2014 “CHANGE – Seasonal Coat Colour and the impact of Climate Change on the genetic composition of boreal species” is available at CIBIO/ICETA, Instituto de Ciências e Tecnologias Agrárias e Agro-Alimentares da Universidade do Porto, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., (FCT/MCTES).
Main research field: Biological Sciences
Sub research field: Evolutionary Genomics
Candidates must hold an MSc degree in areas compatible with the work plan, preferentially with basic training in Biological Sciences or similar areas, and with experience in laboratory work in population genetics and genomics. We seek candidates with i) strong experience in laboratory techniques for population genetics with emphasis on high throughput sequencing (DNA and RNA extraction from various source materials including from museum biological collections, all steps of library preparation, etc.), ii) experience in managing biological collections and databases; iii) good verbal and written communication skills in English and Portuguese, iv) good communication and teamwork skills. The candidate’s Curriculum Vitae must be compatible with the work plan.
The project investigates the genetic basis and evolution of seasonal coat colour change and uses temporal comparisons of genetic variation (from historical and contemporary samples) to assess consequences of dramatic recent changes in the habitat of species. The work of the fellowship holder will be mainly focused in executing the laboratory work for analyses of next generation sequencing data (both genomics and transcriptomics), from DNA and RNA extraction to diverse methods of library preparation for high throughput sequencing. The successful candidate is also expected to manage the collection of biological samples and assist in the coordination of the laboratory work.
The fellowship is granted according to the regulations settled by Law nr.40/2004, of August 18 (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica) and by the Regulamento de Bolsas e Investigação da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2015.pdf.
The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão. Visits to other collaborating labs in Europe and the USA may take place.
Duration of the fellowship:
The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, potentially renewable for an additional period of 12 months, starting on September 1st 2016.
Monthly stipend is €980 according to the stipends established by FCT in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.
Evaluation of applications will be done according to the required competences and will be based on:
a. Specific past experience in tasks described in the work plan (50%);
b. The quality of the scientific and academic curriculum vitae, including publication record (40%);
c. Motivation letter (10%).
The jury may not award the fellowship if the quality of the candidates is less than desired.
José Melo-Ferreira (Chair), Paulo Célio Alves (vowel), Rita Campos (vowel) and Miguel Carneiro (substitute vowel).
Publicity and communication of results:
The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of ICETA facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
The call for applications is open between 9 July 2016 and 23 July 2016 (24:00 GMT).
Applications should be submitted in Portuguese or English by email to email@example.com with the fellowship reference in the subject area, and the following documents attached:
a. Curriculum vitae (including academic training and professional career, a publication list, other relevant information in the context of the project research goals, email address and copies of certificates of academic degrees);
b. Motivation letter (including a brief description of research experience and why the candidate is suitable for the announced position).
